Meet Our Sophmore Intern from NCSU:
Ms. Steinbach
My name is Jennifer Steinbach. I am a sophomore majoring in Elementary Education at NC State University. I grew up in Willow Spring, about 30 minutes from Raleigh, so I have been a fan of the Wolfpack since I was little. Sports and dogs are two things that I can't live without. Basketball and football are my favorite sports. I also love chocolate, going to the lake, hanging out with family, and watching children's movies. Monster's Inc. and Tangled are the best!
I loved "playing school" when I was younger, but I didn't realize that I wanted to be a teacher until I was in high school. Through a program called PEPI at my school, I got to work with a kindergarten class and a 4th grade class. They were so precious and always brightened my day. It was an amazing experience. I always enjoyed school, and as a teacher, I want to instill that passion for learning in other children. I also believe that school is about more than just intellectual knowledge. My goal for my future classrooms will be to create an environment that will help children grow, not just as students, but as well-rounded individuals. I don't have any other teachers in my family, so I'm hoping to start a new trend for the generations to come.
I am so excited for this opportunity and to learn so many new things about teaching. I'm looking forward to a semester full of fun. Thank you for welcoming me into your class!

Meet Our Interns from NCSU:
They will be with us through the 1st week of December.
Ms. Ficken
Hi! My name is Emily Ficken and I am a junior at NC State. I have been in the Elementary Education program for three years and I am so happy to finally be in the methods classes of the program. I grew up in Cary, only a few miles away from NC State. This means I have wanted to be a part of the Wolfpack ever since I was young. I am very involved in CRU (originally Campus Crusade for Christ) at State and lead a Bible study for sophomore girls. It is my favorite responsibility and has been a great experience to plan lessons and learn with my girls.
I am supported in my teaching endeavor by my parents and older brother and sister-in-law. She started teaching high school biology this school year for the first time after graduating from NC State herself. My family is full of many different types of teachers that I didn’t even know until I announced my college plans. My mother may not teach in a school setting, but she teaches women in our church weekly and she has one of the greatest gifts in teaching I have seen. She has been a great source of information and encouragement.
This past summer I worked at a camp in Croatia, a southern European country near Italy. This was one of the greatest experiences of my life and it gave me the chance to be a counselor, leader, and teacher of young kids, some of which did not speak English. This definitely encouraged my desire to be a teacher and further confirmed the abilities I have as such.
I find enjoyment in many random simple things such as superheroes, popcorn, red pandas, The Little Mermaid, and the color blue! I like to consider myself both an exciting and excitable person. I am still a child at heart, although I do enjoy leadership roles. While these are fairly opposite, I think that it makes for a good balance in my authoritative and enthusiasm. I can accept that I can be quirky sometimes but I think that always brings a fun element to a group.

Ms. Scharen
Hello, A.B. Combs! My name is Danielle Scharen. I am a Junior at NC State University and I am so excited to be welcomed to your school! In my third year at NC State, I am very involved on campus. I belong to a service fraternity and work at the University's gym. I spend a lot of time attending NC State sporting events such as football, basketball, soccer, and baseball. I love the atmosphere at NC State because where I'm from, we do not have half as much school spirit as we do in Raleigh! I have spent the past eleven years living in Boston, Massachusetts where I yearned to escape the cold winters by moving back to North Carolina. I spent three years in Chapel Hill when I was younger and fell in love with this beautiful state! I especially enjoy the warmth the south has to offer as I continue running everyday in my free time. I also love the beach more than any other place in the world, so this is the perfect place for me!
There is never a time that I will pass up chocolate or peanut butter, but my biggest weakness is red velvet cupcakes! I get this from my mom who runs daily just so she can enjoy a bowl of ice cream every night. I also have two older brothers and a twin brother, who attends the College of William and Mary. I miss my family and my two dogs everyday, but Boston is over 700 miles from Raleigh!! My favorite things to do with my family is be at the beach, watch football together (Go Patriots!), and laugh together!
I wanted to become a teacher in third grade and ever since then, my plans have not changed. I love working with students and have had experience in every grade from Preschool to fourth, but the majority in second grade. I babysit all ages every week and cannot wait to spend everyday with children in a classroom of my own. My third grade teacher was my main inspiration and I hope to be able to inspire a student of my own to do something he or she loves as well. I am so excited to be able to observe in A.B. Combs this fall and learn from Mrs. Catherwood and all of her first grade students! Thank you for welcoming me into your classroom and letting me be a part of your journey through this year!

Hi A.B. Combs, my name is Rachel Williams. I will be a senior at North Carolina State University and I am studying Elementary Education with a concentration in mathematics. I am from Apex, North Carolina, which is about a 20 minute drive from Raleigh, and have been a Wolfpack fan for as long as I can remember. GO PACK! I enjoy playing volleyball, listening to country music, tailgating/attending NC State football games, running (I am currently training for a marathon!), working at the YMCA, and doing arts and crafts. I have a love for chocolate and peanut butter and traveling!
My inspiration to become a teacher began my sophomore year of high school when I became a lifeguard and taught swim lessons. During that summer, I taught a young boy, who was deathly afraid of water, how to swim. Being a positive and encouraging role model for that child made me realize that I wanted to something like this for the rest of my life. I continued to teach swim lessons until the summer after my freshman year of college when I became a summer camp counselor for the YMCA. I have been working for the YMCA for three years now and couldn’t ask for a more rewarding job.
Another inspiration in my life is my family. I am the oldest of four girls in my family and they mean the world to me. My parents and sisters are a huge part of my life and I don’t know where I would be without them!
During my time at NC State University I have had some experiences teaching and observing in kindergarten, second, and fifth grade. I also tutor students who are in elementary, middle, and high school.
I can’t wait to learn and try new things about being in a first grade classroom and am grateful for the opportunity to work with you! I look forward to meeting you all and am excited for the school year to begin!

Hello A.B. Combs, my name is Sarah Black! I am currently a senior at North Carolina State University studying elementary education with a science concentration (Go Wolfpack!). I lived in Greensboro, North Carolina for ten years but I’ve quickly fallen in love with Raleigh over the last four years at NC State! I’m extremely close with my family and enjoy going home to spend time with them and our two puppies, Bella and Roxy!
On NC State’s campus, I am very involved in my sorority, which I was the president of last year and am currently the campus activities chair! Also, I am a member of two honors fraternities and the Elementary Education club (ELMO). Outside of school, I love to sing, read all types of books, travel to different places and learn about their cultures, cook for my roommates, volunteer to do community service, and spend time with my friends! Some of my favorite things are country music, black and white movies, desserts of any kind, musicals, and Italian food.
Ever since I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to become an elementary school teacher! When I was in elementary school, I used to spend every morning before school in my mother’s first grade classroom. She inspired me to become a teacher because of the way she motivated her students to reach their fullest potential and the passion she had for teaching.
During my time in the Elementary Education department at NC State, I have already had some experience observing and teaching in kindergarten, second, and fourth grade classrooms! I am so excited to be returning back to second grade and spending time learning from Mrs. Catherwood and her students! They will be with us until the end of March :o) Thank-you for showing your support to our teachers-to-be!
Hey! My name is Sarah and I am a sophomore at NC State University studying elementary education (Go Pack!). I am from Kernersville, North Carolina, a small town in between Winston-Salem and Greensboro. I spend most of my time hanging out with friends from school, working (I babysit two kids after school, three days a week), or just relaxing! I love going home to visit my family and puppies, and to see my boyfriend. I love chocolate, Harry Potter, Star Wars, going to sporting events, and just having fun!
I have known since 5th grade that I wanted to be an elementary school teacher and I cannot wait for that dream to come true! I love to see children grow and learn new things, and how excited students get when they grasp a new concept! I can’t wait to spend this semester with you guys J
My inspiration for teaching would have to be my 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Armstrong. Her class was the first class I ever got in trouble in (which scared me) but it was also the class that helped me learn and grow the most! She made activities fun and interesting, she could relate to us as students, and she knew when to be serious or when to have fun.
I can’t wait to get to know you guys more and I know that this semester is going to be lots of fun! I can’t wait to learn new things about being in the classroom and get hands-on experience! I look forward to being this semester with you!

Hello A.B. Combs! My name is Bailey Herring and I am a sophomore studying elementary education at NC State University. I am from Oakboro, NC which is a small town about an hour from Charlotte and it only has one stop light. I grew up with three brothers who I love dearly! Going home for me is definitely an adventure because I have a huge family there to greet me! One of my favorite people in the world is my pawpaw. I try to talk to him daily because he seems to always have something wonderful to say that brightens my day! I love to watch movies, spend time with my friends, and I also love working with kids. I am the Secretary for the Teaching Fellows program at NC State as well as a Goodnight Scholar and NCACTS Fellow which involves me doing 300 hours of community service this year. I am a busy student but I love what I do!
My grandmother was my first grade teacher and I would stay with her during the afternoons. During this time I knew I would become a teacher because I loved playing “school” on her chalkboard (which those seem to not exist anymore). My mother also works in the classroom which has influenced me even more! My senior year, I interned in a third grade classroom for an entire semester and absolutely fell in love with the idea of having my own classroom. I have always wanted to be a teacher and I am extremely excited about working in this classroom over the semester.
I know we are going to have a wonderful semester and I am excited to be spending it with each and every one of you! We are going to have a blast and I cannot wait to learn so much from this experience! Thank you for letting me spend time in your class this year! …and remember GO PACK! J

Hey! My name is Heather and I am a junior at NC State majoring in Elementary Education. I am from Charlotte, NC, but was born in New York. I have an older brother who just graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill. I spend most of my free time with my three best friends, watching movies, or just relaxing! Going home to visit my family is always fun too! I love country music, movies, my friends and family, chocolate, and all Italian food!
I absolutely love kids and I think teaching is the perfect career for me! I have been babysitting since the age of 13. My senior year in high school I peer-tutored fifth graders everyday. Last year I observed a fifth grade classroom and tutored two kindergartners. I can't think of a better way to spend my time!
My inspiration for teaching would be my fourth grade teacher. She was the most creative, kind, confident, loving, and best teacher I have had! She absolutely loves teaching and always had a positive attitude. I will always look up to her and strive to be as good of a teacher as she is!
Being in my third year in the education program at NC State is very exciting! I am starting to learn all about strategies for teaching, how and what children learn in the K-2 grades, and how to manage classrooms! I am so excited to be working with this class and look forward to spending time with all of the students!

Hey guys! My name is Hannah and I am also a Junior at NC State studying Elementary Education. I am from Wake Forest, NC and just love it here! I have two older brothers who both graduated from East Carolina, but both of my parents graduated from NC State so I'm following in their footsteps ;) I love hanging out with my friends, going to football games, and just having fun.
Working with children has always been something that I have wanted to do my whole life and I am so excited for this year. I have babysat for as long as I can remember, and still do on my free time. I took a class called Teacher Cadet in high school where I interned in a 2nd grade classroom for a semester. I absolutely loved it!!
My mother is the main reason I want to teach. She is an 8th grade Science teacher and she loves it. She says that it is a lot of work but it is all worth it when you see your students succeed. I live by those words and I hope to one day become as good of a teacher as she is :)
I know that this semester is going to be so much fun and I cannot wait to learn tons of new things about teaching!! Being in the classroom is something I have looked forward to for a very long time and I am so excited that it is finally here! :)
