Another activity you can do is munchie math dominoes-
The students will create dominoes using notecards and cereal. Give each student 5 notecards with a line drawn down the middle. They can glue down pieces of cereal to make different numbered dominoes. I have a poster that shows the way dominoes are supposed to look (the correct way). After they create their dominoes they can use them to make addition sentences. I’ve attached the sheet my kids used. Be sure to model how to make the dominoes and then how to create the number sentences before having them try! J
-Playing “flash tens frame”- put counters on the overhead- flash it on and then off quickly. Start with low numbers and increase. Remind the students that 1 row is 5 counters- when you get to numbers higher than 5 they should remember this in order to count quickly. When they are ready introduce numbers 11-15 (one full tens frame will be 10)
Number sentence and ten frames top row plus bottom row- Put 5 counters on the top row and then 2 on the row. Ask how many on top and then how many on bottom. Record the problem on the board using words (five counters and two more counters equals seven counters).
Ask how you could also write a numbers sentence (tell them a number sentence uses numbers and symbols instead of words (5+2=7)
What does + mean? What does = mean?
Repeat the activity with numbers up to 10 on the tens frame
Filled Plus Empty- Place 8 counters on the tens frames transparency
How many counters are there (8)
How many empty spaces are there? (2)
Write a number sentence (8+2=10)
Do four more problems (3 counters, 7 spaces- 3+7=10)
- Greater than Ten- Place 13 counters on the tens frame. Ask how many there are. Give a number sentence (10+3=13). Repeat this activity with different numbers. After the students are comfortable writing number sentences put a new number on the tens frame. Ask if they can come up with lots of different number sentences. Example: 14 (7+7, 10+4, 8+6, etc.)
