Toilet Paper Scarecrow - Mental Image Lesson
Read the book "The Lonely Scarecrow" without showing the pictures and have students draw their favorite part of the book (or have them draw what they think a scarecrow looks like), then read the story again and show them the pictures. Have a discussion about the differences between their mental image and the author’s image.

Paper Bag Scarecrow
You Need:
- small and medium brown paper bags
- asstd. colored paper
- markers, crayons
- newspaper
- tape
Craft:
Assemble body by stuffing medium brown paper bag with crumpled newspaper. Fold the top closed and tape it shut. Assemble head by filling small paper bag with more crumpled newspaper about 2/3 full. Twist and tape shut. Make a hole in the body to insert the twisted end of the head into. Tape into place. Cut arms and legs out of brown paper and glue or tape to body. Make "hay" by cutting paper bags into thin strips about2-3" long (longer for hair). Glue "hay" around neck, wrists and ankles. Also glue longer strips to head for hair. Fall Leaf Collage
Create a leaf collage by either having students find leaves and bring them in, or have a collection of leaves ready. Have students place the leaves underneath a piece of paper, then color over the leaves with different fall-colored crayons.

Sorting & Graphing Candy Wrappers:
-reading environmental print (labels)
-have students bring in 1 candy wrapper
-collect wrappers and as a class sort the wrappers into different groups
(with nuts, start with M, chocolate, hard candy, etc.)
-you can create a class graph by either types of candy, by syllables of the name of the candy, or by number of letters in the name of the candy.
Sorting & Graphing M&M’s:
- give students individual m&m packets
-have students open and sort m&m’s by color
-give students the m&m graph (I have this I think!) and have them graph the number of each color of m&m’s they have
-allow students to create addition/subtraction problems with their data.
-allow students to analyze and compare their data
Pumpkin Seed Counting & Sorting:
-cover tables with butcher paper
-Break class up into small groups
-Give each group a medium to large sized pumpkin with tops already cut open
-have students scoop out the seeds and put on butcher paper to sort into different categories (small, large, white, tan, smooth, bumpy, etc.)
-put seeds into a large plastic bowl
-give students gallon sized baggies to put seeds into as they count together in the group
-have students write total number of seeds on outside of bag.
-over the long weekend, take seeds home and ROAST them J Bring back to school for snack on Wednesday for students to taste during snack time. (Or you could put seeds in little baggies and staple a pumpkin seed roasting recipe to the baggie for them to try at home!
Crayon Candles (Solids & Liquids/Family Feast)
-create a candle for student’s family feast….dinner at home while integrating science!
-you will need a hotplate, probably best to do in small group with parent volunteers
Instructions to make a candle out of crayons and a milk carton, submitted by Nicki.
Materials Needed:
· Crayons
· Candle Wicks
· 2 Pint Milk Carton (save lunch milk cartons!)
· Ice
Instructions:
Candlemaking can be can be both fun and dangerous. You should never try any projects that use heat and fire without an adults help, and always follow candle safety rules.
Cut off the top of the milk carton so that you have a "box" with one end open. Next, Melt crayons over medium heat (there are plastic bags available that you can place the wax or crayons in so that you then just place that bag into boiling water to melt). The crayons can be broken and different colors, but the washable type do NOT work well. You can use the wax for candle crafts found at the discount stores and add just a few crayons of the desired color to tint it. Place wick into the milk carton and fill carton will ice. Be sure that the wick is fairly centered and running the entire length of the carton. Now, pour melted wax/crayon mixture into the carton filling to the top. Let sit until hardened and ice has melted, then carefully cut and peel away the carton from the candle.
You will now have a beautiful candle. The ice in the carton caused the wax to quickly harden around the cubes. The result is a "swiss cheese" looking candle. Each one looks a little different! These must be handled carefully after finished as the swiss cheese nature of the candle make it fragile.
Helpful Hints from Diane in Arizona: I have done this candle project. It is fun. I have two hints: One, make sure the ice is crushed well - too large and your candle will not stay together; and two, use a taper candle in place of the candle wick. Taper candles are far easier to acquire than the wicks if you don't have a good craft shop nearby.

Fall Festivities/Games:
Pumpkin Passing Game:
Give the traditonal game of musical chairs a bit of a Halloween twist and then some!
Materials Needed:
· Mini Pumpkins
· Music
· Paint or Markers
Instructions:
There are no losers in this game if you make sure you have enough mini pumpkins for everyone! As each player gets 'out', give them a small pumpkin and let them go to a designated area and decorate it using markers or paint.
This game is played the same way as 'Hot Potato'. Everyone who is playing sits or stands in a circle. Start the music and start passing a small pumpkin around the circle. If you have quite a few people, you can pass 2 or more pumpkins at a time.
The pumpkin travels around the circle of people until the music suddenly stops. The person who is holding the pumpkin when the music stops is 'out' and leaves the circle.
Start the music and pumpkin passing again and continue until there's only one person left.
Find the Pumpkin
YOU WILL NEED:
-10 pieces of white paper-5 pieces of yellow paper-5 pieces of orange paper-a crayon-scissors
- Draw ten white pumpkins, five yellow pumpkins and five orange pumpkins.
- Cut out all the pumpkins.
- Draw a funny face on each pumpkin.
- Write the number 1 on the backs of the white pumpkins.
- Write the number 5 on the backs of the yellow pumpkins.
- Write the number 10 on the backs of the orange pumpkins.
- Hide the pumpkins.
- When your friends come, tell them to find as many pumpkins as they can before you say "Stop!"
- Have your friends add up the numbers on the pumpkins they found.
- The person with the most points wins.
The Pumpkin Pie Game:
Orange paper Plate (or one you've painted orange)
Black and red markers or crayons
Scissors
One die
Score pad
1. Fold plate in half and cut. Fold each halve in half and cut. Repeat with the other two halves until you end up with eight "pie slices."
2. Using the black marker, number six slices 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.
3. With the red marker, number the two black pieces 4 and 5.
Rules of the Game
All pie pieces are placed together in the center of the play area. Each player throws the die. The player with the highest number starts the game.
1. The first player rolls the die. Player then takes the pie slice matching the number rolled. Player's score is recorded.
2. Second player rolls the die, takes the slice matching the number rolled, and score is recorded. Game continues around. If a 4 or 5 is rolled, players take the slice with the matching BLACK numbers.
NOTE: If another player rolls a 4 or 5, then that player may take the Bonus slice with the matching RED number. Game continues until all pieces are gone. No score is recorded when a player rolls a number for which there is no longer a matching slice. Play passes to the next player.
The player with the highest score wins.
