I Am a Good Citizen Because...
This lotus will allow your students to draw the many different ways that they are good citizens in their home, neighborhood, town, city, state, and country. If possible, students can also write a few words or a sentence to go along with each picture.

Write the Room: "CITIZEN"
Students love to find and read new words. While teaching them what it means to be a good citizen, have them find words around the room that start with the letters in "CITIZEN". The words they find do not have to tie into the idea of "CITIZEN". For example,
C- cat
I - igloo
T - this

Cookie Voting...
Students will test 3 types of cookies (Oreos, Shortbread, Nutter Butter). They will do a crumbs test with a rolling pin, a dunk test in milk, a smell test, and a taste test. Students will use "hot dots" (colored circle stickers) to put their vote on a graph made for each test. Then, students will discuss the data that was collected (Which was the most, least, tie, and why?). Then each student fills out a cookie ballot (see below). All votes are accounted for and the winner is announced!

If I Was the President - Lotus...
This lotus can help students organize their thoughts on what they would do or say if they were the president. If you have small individual pictures of your students you can either fold a small paper in half to create a 3-D effect (picture popping off the page) or use thick mounting squares to give the 3-D effect.

Democracy & Citizenship
*Discuss democracy and remind students about how we decided our Class Norms (everyone shared their idea and everyone had a voice).
*Discuss what it means to be a good citizen:
-honor, respect, courage, compassion, responsibility
*Share personal stories about being honest, respecting and helping others.
*Role play scenarios where you have the choice to be a good citizen.

Officer Buckle & Gloria - Tips for Being a Good Citizen
Have students create an affinity diagram as a group with their tips for being a good citizen written on post-its.
What is a good citizen? - Fishbone
On each fin of the fish, have students write down what citizens act like and sound like, and then what they do not act like and sound like. In the tail of the fish, have students write why it is important to be a good citizen.
Voter Registration & I VOTED! Stickers
Students really feel like they have a voice when they fill out their own voter registration card and get a sticker after voting in the voting booth!
Light Vote on School Issues
Students can hot-dot (light vote - use 3 colors, each color will be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice vote) on important school issues that they may want to change (littering, rocks on the playground, composting, etc.). They can also work in groups to develop campaign posters about the issues. On their poster they can include 3 reasons why you should or should not vote to change the issue at hand.
Campaign Posters
Students can create their own campaign posters. It should include a symbol or picture of them, a slogan, and their name. Show students a sample campaign poster and talk about how they use 2-3 colors and a small amount of words and designs in order to have a bigger impact and receive more votes.
Flags & Stars
Students can create their own flags by attaching a rectangular piece of construction paper (flag) to a popsicle stick (pole). They can decorate their flag accordingly. Students can practice drawing stars (for little ones, I teach them to draw a triangle right-side up, and then another one up-side down). They can cut out their stars and paint them with red, white, yellow, and blue paint.
Voting Booths
Create life-size voting booths with refrigerator boxes. Ask your local home store to save them for you! Use a box-cutter to cut a doorway. Have students use paper and paint to decorate the sides of the voting booth. Have students cut paper strips and glue together to make a chain link. Hang the chains in the doorway to act as a privacy curtain. Inside, place a desk with laptop that has the voting options pulled up on it. Students will really feel like they have a voice!
